Access to RefWorks ends on 31 December 2022. We recommend you use EndNote Online instead.

RefWorks is web-based bibliographic management program that allows you to create your own personal database of references. You can automatically import references from a search performed in an online database or enter references manually.

RefWorks allows you to format references for assignments in a variety of citation (output) styles, making referencing and citation a lot simpler and saving you time. If you are using Harvard WesternSydU please use the RefWorks Harvard WesternSydU training notes to assist with the correct display of your in-text citations and reference list.

Access to RefWorks is provided to all Western Sydney University staff and students.

You need to sign up for an individual account when you first access RefWorks, and use this account each time.

To create a RefWorks account:

  1. Go to and click the “Create account” link.
  2. Fill in your information making sure to use your institutional email address (you can’t sign up with,, etc.).
  3. Once you activate your account (you'll receive an email with a link to complete the registration process), you’ll get access immediately and can get started managing your documents.

If you wish to format a bibliography and cite references in your assignments, a small software download onto your personal computer called ‘Write and Cite' is required. The RefWorks Guide includes a section on ‘Using Write-N-Cite for Microsoft Word to Write and Format Your Paper’ which provides details on installing and using Write-N-Cite.
