Wombats: Australia's largest ecosystem engineers is an open educational resource designed to enhance public understanding of wombats and is suitable for students, wildlife carers, veterinarians, wildlife managers and all those interested in wombats. The resource includes scientific information on the biology and behaviour of all three extant species of wombat, as well as their critical role as ecosystem engineers. It provides practical guidance and advice for experienced wildlife carers, thus bridging the gap between researchers and the wider community. Importantly, this resource informs readers how they can contribute to increasing our understanding of wombat biology through citizen science by monitoring wombat populations, mitigating threats, and ensuring the survival of these unique Australian marsupials for future generations. The text aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 4 Quality education, supporting inclusive and affordable access to higher education resources, and Goal 15 Life on land.
