About TableBuilder

TableBuilder is an online tool for creating your own tables of Census data, of all variables contained in the Census Output Record File, including age, education, housing, income, transport, religion, ethnicity, occupation, family composition for all ABS geographic areas.

The TableBuilder User Guide provides detailed instructions about how to build, customise, save and export tables and graphs in TableBuilder.

TableBuilder can be used to:

  • construct tables using data variables you select
  • display counts, percentages and relative standard errors in your table
  • select from categorical variables (eg state, age, sex)
  • calculate means, medians and quantiles for continuous variables (eg income)
  • create custom ranges from continuous variables
  • create graphs using your customised tables
  • save or export your tables as CSV, Excel or SDMX files.

How to apply for TableBuilder

Use your current Western Sydney University email address when applying. 

  Step 1: Register and activate your user account

  • Register a new user account in the Registration Centre and agree to the Terms and conditions.
    - Use your organisation email address when registering.
    - If you are not sure if you have previously registered, contact microdata.access@abs.gov.au or phone 02 6252 7714 before re-registering.
    - If you are a user in more than one organisation, you will need to register separately for each organisation using each organisation's email address.
  • You will receive an email asking you to activate your account by clicking on the link.
  • Once activated, all registered users automatically have access to the free products, including Census TableBuilder Basic.

Step 2: Join an Organisation

  • If your organisation has already been registered you may be automatically joined to your organisation in Registration Centre. You will receive a confirmation email to let you know you have been joined and which products your organisation has subscribed to. If you are not automatically joined to your organisation, contact microdata.access@abs.gov.au and request to be joined to your organisation.

Step 3: Subscribe to products

  • Register a new user account in the Registration Centre and agree to the Terms and conditions.

  • You will receive an email asking you to activate your account by clicking on the link.

Step 4: Log in and use TableBuilder

LOGGING IN AS A GUEST USER
Users can access Census TableBuilder Basic datasets as a guest user without registering.
Guest users can:

  • access Census TableBuilder basic datasets
  • create and download tables up to 10,000 cells
  • use and customise predefined tables, and
  • present data in graphs and maps.

Guest users cannot:

  • save tables
  • create custom groupings
  • run large tables up to 40 million cells.

Log in as a guest user. Links to log into TableBuilder systems are also available on the About TableBuilder page on the ABS website.

You will be asked to agree to Terms and Conditions before accessing TableBuilder as a guest user.

 LOGGING IN AS A REGISTERED USER

The ABS has two TableBuilder systems:

  1. Census TableBuilder which contains data from the 2006, 2011 and 2016 Censuses of Population and Housing.
  2. TableBuilder which has other ABS datasets, including survey data, administrative data and linked data.

Links to log into TableBuilder systems are also available on the About TableBuilder page on the ABS website.

You will know which system you are using by the banner at the top of the screen.

After registering, log into the TableBuilder system that includes the dataset you want to use.

Enter your User ID and password (obtained when registering) and select Log in.

The Log in page also includes useful links to:

  • Register for new users who have not yet registered for TableBuilder
  • Terms & Conditions that users must comply with when using TableBuilder
  • Forgotten password
  • Forgotten User ID.

While using TableBuilder, users may access this User Guide at any time by clicking on the question mark icon on the top right corner of the TableBuilder system. Supporting information will open in a new window and will not affect the active session.
